Analyzing Mccarthyism As Depicted In The Political Cartoon
This cartoon depicts the Committee on Un-American Activities speeding through the streets and not caring that they are running over people. The chaos is obvious, with papers flying everywhere, parking meters falling down, and people looking terrified. This cartoon shows that Joseph McCarthy’s committee was creating havoc in America and wouldn’t stop. It appears that this is true as McCarthy started to make accusations against Hollywood actors, directors, screenwriters, and so on. McCarthy was attacking icons of America that are well-known all over the globe. Charlie Chaplin (and Arthur Miller), Langston Hughes, Orson Wees, and Langston Hughes were some of those being accused. This is similar to The Crucible. In the book, the court accused several well-known people, such as Martha Corey and Rebecca Nurse, of witchcraft. They then set them all to death. Many people were afraid, as these were people that the town’s people respected and looked upto. Reverend Parris fears that the townpeople will revolt and overthrow their courts if the men are hanged. He already saw the town against him. That morning, he discovered a knife inside his door. He is afraid that the residents will revolt against him and end up hanging themselves.
